The question is as simple as it sounds, what do hear. What I mean by that is do you hear the instruments, do you hear the singer (if there are words), do you listen to just one instrument.
Why do you think that is? Do you write? Do you sing? Do you play an instrument?
My friend and I got to talking about this. She listens to the words because she is a writer. "Musicans are a type of writer," she stated, "and that's how they express themselves. " Another friend plays guitar, bass guitar, and he said once he thought about it, he actually did listen more to the bass than anything else.
I personally listen to the music. I play different instruments, but I love piano over anything. Even with beautiful words I still manage to want to just hear the piano.
